Quick Draw Event

Bradenton Farmer’s Market

More than a dozen artists participated in the Quickdraw art competition, where they painted scenes of Old Main Street “en plein air,” French for in the open air, a term used to describe outdoor painting. This event is open to every level of painter. It is a fun event that helps promote the Paint the Town paint-‐out. Artists have two hours to complete their works. During this time all registered Quick Draw participants will set up their easels and paint in the hustle and bustle of the Farmer’s Market. Together, artists and spectators are immersed in the creative process.

Introduction to Matting & Framing Workshop

www.artcentermanatee.org

Put your artwork on the wall! Learn how to Mat & Frame!

You have an opportunity to cut as many mats as workshop time allows. I will demonstrate the techniques necessary and each student will cut their own mat board, prepare their artwork, learn to apply a brown paper backing to wood frames, assemble and finish their piece for hanging. There is a lot to learn in this class, I will discuss affordable options, market choices, proper care & presentation. Topics covered include color context, mat mathematics, cutting a reverse bevel for pastel and charcoal pieces, mounting and floating artwork, double mats, cutting multiple windows, tips for photography, lacing for fiber artwork, and using frame spacers. It’s going to be fun! Bring a lunch and suggested materials. Canvas on stretcher frames will not be covered.

SUGGESTED MATERIALS AND OPTIONS – NOTIFY STUDENTS IN ADVANCE

I suggest students provide the materials for as many pieces as they feel comfortable with. Also consider bringing a piece you may have questions about.

I will provide the following for the class: a variety of tape choices for mounting, brown paper for finishing ready-made wood frames, three Compact Logan mat cutters, and the necessary tools and adhesives required for use in class.

Student Handbook, by Tanya Calhoun           $8 (optional)

The Student Handbook is 40pages of material used to accompany the class.  Included are all of the procedures for matting, mounting, and finishing artwork, tricks and tips, suggested materials, references and resources.

YOU HAVE TWO OPTIONS FOR YOUR PROJECTS, PLEASE BRING MATERIALS ACCORDINGLY:

mounted ready-to-frame piece requires: artwork, mat board, and foam core.

A completely finished piece requires all materials necessary for a mounted ready-to-frame piece with the following additions: a ready-made wood frame or metal frame assembly kit (you must have two pair of chops), some glass or acrylic (cut to fit the frame), and a picture hanging kit (wire, hooks, and bumpers). When purchasing your frames add 4” to the length and width of your artwork to determine the frame size, this will allow for a 2” mat border, otherwise adjust according to personal preference.

The Artful Lobster

The Hermitage House Artist Retreat

www.hermitageartistretreat.org

For those of your new to this fun event, The Artful Lobster is the only annual fundraiser held on the Hermitage campus, and the only time when you can be guaranteed that all studios will be open and that a full compliment of artists will be there for you to meet and speak with.

World-class artistic creators of all disciplines are invited to work at the Hermitage Artist Retreat ; Our artists live and work in — and are inspired by — five “Old Florida” buildings that have been lovingly restored into living space and studio space. Fifteen miles of Gulf of Mexico beach stretch north and south and endless miles of aquamarine water reach to the western horizon where the sun sets in glory each and every night.

The Hermitage exists today as perhaps the last existing example of pioneer beachfront homesteading on Florida’s Gulf of Mexico. It exists because it found its true purpose. It is a special place and many people throughout its history have recognized its unique qualities. The artists of all disciplines who get to experience the Hermitage tap into its energy and it becomes the catalyst for their creativity. Great art is created here. It is the art of our day by the artists of our age inspired by our ecological beachfront treasures and by this architectural history.

That the Hermitage House, its beach cottage, and the adjacent Whitney property survived both Mother Nature and real estate development is a testament to the will of the Englewood community who would not let its history die and be lost to future generations.
